How will the estate be purchased?
The funding required for the purchase of the estate will be sought from grant-making bodies and funders such as the Big Lottery, Historic Scotland and others which fit the objectives of our plans for Castle Toward. There will be no expectation for the members of the local community to contribute financially in any way toward the purchased of the estate. Potential funders will be identified as part of the feasibility studies conducted during the first half of 2014.
What can I do to help?
We would like to see everyone in South Cowal become a Member of SCCDC (subject to eligibility). It is a Community company, and the Community should be fully involved in our strategic direction. Membership is free and gives you full voting rights at all General Meetings. We would also like to hear from anyone who has skills or experience that may be of use to us. Whatever your area of interest, from fundraising to gardening, accounting to I.T, please get in touch if you have time to spare and we will find a use for you!
What will happen if the estate isn't sold?
There has already been one failed attempt by Argyll and Bute Council to sell the estate to a commercial buyer and we are becoming increasingly concerned that, without proper investment, Castle Toward will be doomed to a fate of continued decline and eventual abandonment. Should the estate be sold to a private buyer, there would be no guarantee that the property would be accessible by the local community, and an asset that has for so long been a part of the lives of people in South Cowal and beyond, could be taken away from us forever.
Will the estate be for the benefit of the community?
Absolutely. Our plans for the estate have the Community and their core. The grounds and woodland would be accessible for walking and picnics, whilst space would be available for functions, events and general Community use. Sports facilities will be available for local clubs and workshops could be available for use by artists, craftsmen and musicians. It will be your space and we will be continuing to consult with the Community to ensure that we are meeting your needs.
How can I have a say on the plans?
During the first half of 2014 SCCDC will be holding a series of public workshops and meetings where you can come along and let us know what you think about the plans, and tell us exactly what it is that you feel would benefit the Community. A Community Engagement Animateur is being recruited to consult with the Community and garner feedback on the proposed purchase of Castle Toward estate. In the meantime please feel free to contact us with any comments that you may have, or even leave feedback on this site.
We have a public Q&A session on Sunday the 4th of May from 7-9pm at Innellan village hall. If you have a question will not come along and put it to our panel.
When do I get to vote?
Starting on the 10th of May voters registered on the electoral register in South Cowal will be able to cast their vote at any one of our mobile ballot box locations. For more details click here
